Northwinds ESU: 2006 – 2007 Report
Northwinds Explorer Scout Unit was formed in September 2006 to give those aged 14 to 18 another place to pursue scouting in the newly formed Brunel District.
Since we began, with 8 members we have lost three and then had one of them come back. Currently we have 6 members with 1 or 2 who are starting to think about joining.
We have run a Scout night at the 209th and will shortly be running them at 63rd (Friday), 128th, 63rd (Wednesday), 1st Filton and there are still 2 more groups we are waiting to hear from! Hopefully these nights will get the Scouts interested enough to join us when the time comes. In preparation for this the Explorers did Module A of the Young Leaders Training. This enables them to help to run (under supervision) different sections from Beavers to Scouts.
We have been on two camps, one of which the Explorers planned themselves! They chose the campsite (Conygres, Wotton-under-Edge), planned the activities, decided what kit to take, how to layout the site and what to eat. They did all this while trying not to make it so expensive that they couldn’t afford to go. The other camp was held at Miskin Mill (near Cardiff). On this camp most of the Explorers went skiing and were invested at the bottom of a coal mine!
There are several county events especially for Explorers. These included the 1 Nite Stand (all night party with live band, cinema and camp fire) and the Rickard Shield (a night hike competition). The Explorers enjoyed taking part in both of these (although I think most of them enjoyed the party more than the hiking).
Recently we have had a go at Mexican Ready, Steady, Cook! Where the Explorers had to cook a Mexican style meal with no advanced knowledge of the ingredients or what style of food they would be making. They have also built and then raced around an obstacle course.
One of the most popular things we have run on a Thursday night has been Indoor Caving. The Explorers had to build a cave system on 2 levels using tables, chairs and groundsheets. They then had to find their way around this with no lights at all!
The Explorers have been able to see pictures of all of these activities on our website. They are also able to see the programme and find out the latest news about the Unit.
Last, but by no means least, I would like to thank Kevin and Karen for all of their help with running the Unit.
Ben

Northwinds ESU: Explorer of the Year
The first ever winner of the Explorer of the Year Trophy was Mike N.
He has turned up to nearly everything we have run, taken part in every fundraising activity and been very enthusiastic (sometimes a bit over enthusiastic).
Although he didn't say so, he seemed to be quite pleased and slightly surprised to have won the Trophy.
